How to Generate and Edit Illustrations

Open the picture panel, pick a style, write a prompt, generate art, regenerate variations, and place illustrations on your AnyTale book pages.

How to Generate and Edit Illustrations

Bringing your story to life with pictures is simple in AnyTale. Follow these steps to create, refine, and place illustrations on any page.

1. Open the Picture Panel

Open your book in the editor and select the page you want to illustrate. Click the Picture panel in the toolbar to reveal the illustration tools. This is where you choose a style, write your prompt, and generate art for the current spread.

2. Pick an Illustration Style

Before generating, choose an art style that matches the mood of your tale. AnyTale offers several looks, from soft watercolor to bold cartoon and dreamy storybook.

  • Keep one style across the whole book for a consistent feel.
  • Hover over each thumbnail to preview the look.
  • You can switch styles later, but regenerating will use tokens.

3. Write or Adjust the Image Prompt

The prompt tells the AI what to draw. AnyTale usually suggests one based on your page text, but you can edit it for better results.

Describe the scene clearly: who is in it, what they are doing, and where. For example: "A small fox in a red scarf waving from a snowy hilltop at sunset."

  • Mention the main character, action, setting, and time of day.
  • Avoid contradictions and overly long prompts.
  • Add details like colors or emotions to guide the result.

4. Generate the Illustration

When your prompt is ready, click Generate. The AI creates an image in a few seconds.

Each generation uses tokens from your balance, so review your prompt before you click. You can see your remaining tokens at the top of the editor.

5. Regenerate Variations

Not happy with the first result? Click Regenerate to produce a new variation from the same prompt, or tweak the prompt and try again.

  • Each regeneration creates a fresh image and uses tokens.
  • Browse through your options and keep the one you like best.
  • Small prompt changes often produce big improvements.

6. Place and Edit the Image on the Page

Once you have an illustration you love, add it to the page. Drag to reposition it, pull the corner handles to resize, and use the layout controls to set it as a full-page background or a framed picture.

  • Adjust the position so it does not cover important text.
  • Layer images behind or in front of text as needed.
  • Replace the image any time by generating again.

That's it, your page now has a custom illustration ready for the next chapter of your story.
